Unity Teams helps you and your team create together, faster. It makes it simple to save, share and sync your Unity projects with anyone. Unity is the ultimate game development platform. Use Unity to build high-quality 3D and 2D games, deploy them across mobile, desktop, VR/AR, consoles or the Web, and connect with loyal and enthusiastic players and customers. Team seats are attached directly to an Organization. When you create your first Project, you get a Teams Basic subscription that has three Team seats. If you subscribe to Teams Advanced, the seats you buy are added to the Organization. For Project team member to use Unity Teams, you must assign them a Team seat in your organization.

This guide assumes you already have installed Unity using the Unity Hub program. If you are new to Unity, we recommend visiting Unity Learn and complete the Unity Essentials learning path first.

Install Unity support for Visual Studio

Visual Studio Tools for Unity is a free extension that provides support for writing and debugging C# and more. Visit the Tools for Unity overview for a complete list of what the extensions includes.

Note

This installation guide is for Visual Studio. If you're using Visual Studio Code, please visit the Unity Development with VS Code documentation.

  1. Download the Visual Studio installer, or run it if already installed.

  2. Click Modify (if already installed) or Install (for new installations) for your desired version of Visual Studio.

  3. On the Workloads tab, scroll to the Gaming section and select the Game development with Unity workload.

This installation guide is for Visual Studio for Mac. If you're using Visual Studio Code, please visit the Unity Development with VS Code documentation.

Tools for Unity is included with the installation of Visual Studio for Mac and no separate installation steps are required. You can verify this in the Visual Studio for Mac > Extensions > Game Development menu. Visual Studio for Mac Tools for Unity should be enabled.

Check for updates

It's recommended to keep Visual Studio and Visual Studio for Mac updated so you have the latest bug fixes, features, and Unity support. This doesn't require an update of Unity versions.

  1. Click the Help > Check for Updates menu.

  2. If there is an update available, the Visual Studio Installer will show a new version. Click the Update button.

  1. Click the Visual Studio for Mac > Check for Updates... menu to open the Visual Studio Update dialog.
  2. If there is an update available, click the Install button.

Configure Unity to use Visual Studio

By default, Unity should already be configured to use Visual Studio or Visual Studio for Mac as a script editor. You can confirm this or change the external script editor to a specific version of Visual Studio from the Unity Editor.

  1. In the Unity Editor, select the Edit > Preferences menu..

  2. Select the External Tools tab on the left.

  3. The External Script Editor dropdown list provides a way to choose different installations of Visual Studio. You can also click Browse... from the dropdown list to add an unlisted version.

  4. If Browse... was selected, navigate to the Common7/IDE directory inside your Visual Studio installation directory and select devenv.exe. Then, click Open.

  5. Once Visual Studio is selected in the External Script Editor list, confirm that the Editor Attaching checkbox is selected.

  6. Close the Preferences dialog to complete the configuration process.

Building Unity In The Workplace

Sign up for the Unity Student plan above.

  1. You will be prompted to create, or log in to, your Unity ID and GitHub account.
  2. Apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which requires proof of enrollment in an accredited institution.
  3. Once you’re verified through GitHub, sign in to the Unity Student plan here to get started.
Unity teams basic subscription

You can log in to Unity and access your Student plan from any computer, including at school. Note: If your school uses the Educational Grant License, you may not be prompted to log in to the Unity Hub or the Editor. In this case, you can still use your Unity Student ID to separately log in to Learn Premium and the Asset Store.

The Unity Student plan is available for free to individual students and cannot be purchased. Learn about the free Educational Grant License for your institution’s classroom needs.

Teams

Your friends and classmates are welcome to sign up for their own free Unity Student plan.The Unity Student plan also comes with five seats of Unity Teams that allow you share a project with collaborators.

In your GitHub account settings, visit Applications > Authorized OAuth Apps to check whether you have authorized the Unity OAuth app. If you granted this application access to your GitHub account, you should hear back from GitHub as soon as they have verified your student status.

Your existing Unity Pro or Plus subscription will not be automatically cancelled. If you have purchased or have access to such a subscription, contact customer support so they can cancel your previous subscription as well as grant you your new free Unity Student plan.

Once you activate your Unity Student plan you will get an email with a unique coupon code and instructions to claim your Student Asset Pack.

Yes. Sign up for the Unity Student plan with your Unity ID. Once verified through GitHub, activate your new license through your Preferences in the Unity Hub using the license key you will receive by email.

Unity Student is for individual students to create, learn, and share their Unity projects at home, school, or elsewhere. The Educational Grant License is used by educators at academic institutions to teach Unity in the classroom.

Unity Teams Basic Installation

If you’ve successfully signed up for the Unity Student plan, you will have access to the plan for 1 year. After 1 year, you can renew your Unity Student plan as long as you’re still a student and an active member of the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

You can only associate one Unity ID with your Unity Student plan. If you need to change the email address associated with your Unity ID, please follow these instructions.
